The Best Places to Stay and Road Bike in Tucson

ROAD BIKING – TUCSON, Arizona – The Tucson area offers the best road biking opportunities of any place in the world. Check out my running blog and thoughts here on the best places to road bike and cycle in Tucson. While the Tucson area is an incredible cycling destination, it is a geographically big city. There are areas of Tucson and our neighboring towns that are much more conducive – and safer.

And there is no better place than the Green Valley/Sahuarita/Tubac area. Just a 20 minute drive from Tucson, this is the most choice area for road cyclists if you are looking for safe, wide open roads, incredible scenery and great climbing rides. In fact, many roadies choose this area to retire just for the cycling and mountain biking.

Madera Canyon, Mount Hopkins, Amado to Arivaca offer incredible climbing opportunities.

Lodging, Hotels For Cyclists in Green Valley

This is true rural, desert road biking. There are many VRBO and vacation rental opportunities here. This is not a great spot for those needing 4 star hotels, great restaurants and fun city activity. This area is a retirement and family area. IF you are fine with Best Western, Holiday Inn Express, then you have options. The Inn at San Ignacio is not bad.

Wherever you stay in Green Valley, you can leave your doorstep and bike all the way to the Mexican border or north to Sahuarita or the San Xavier Mission. One of our favorite rides is biking 20 miles south to Tubac by using the west frontage roads. The Tubac Deli has great coffee. Italian Peasant is a good burgers, pizza, italian restaurant.

Our clients rave about this area. In our minds, there is Tucson and then there is Southern Arizona. Road cycling in Southern Arizona is by far and away the best cycling in all of the Southwest – and perhaps the world. The desert scenery, spectacular mountains and sparse traffic make this a rural cycling adventure to die for. Mountain bikers are 30 to 40 minutes from the Arizona Trail, Tubac’s Jesuit Gold Trail and Tucson Mountain Park on the southwest side of Tucson.
